More information (for purchasing) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cremonatools.com\/violin-making\/bridge\/despiau.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this link<\/a> with explanations on <em>wood selection<\/em> and <em>quality grading<\/em>. Mr. Nicolas DESPIAU (CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.despiau-chevalets.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Despiau Chevalets<\/a>) comments that <em>&#8220;remember, at least 20% of your instrument sound is delivered by your bridge&#8221;<\/em>. Note that this representation looks like a violoncello&#8217;s bridge, not a violin&#8217;s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The bridge <strong>plays a vital part<\/strong> (no pun intended \ud83d\ude42 ) on violin making, responsible for the final sound produced by the instruments, as I&#8217;ve discussed earlier on the <a href=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/09\/about-violin-cross-sections-and-bridges\/\">cross-section of a violin<\/a> post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Violin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attach a metal, rubber, leather, or wooden device<\/a> called a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mute_(music)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mute<\/a><\/em>, or <em>sordino<\/em>, to the bridge of the violin gives a softer, more mellow tone, with fewer audible <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overtone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overtones<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"307\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/bridge-sordino-peg-1.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1183\" style=\"width:370px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-sordino-peg-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-sordino-peg-1-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Maestronet has an interesting post on <a href=\"https:\/\/maestronet.com\/forum\/index.php?\/topic\/334093-cutting-your-own-bridge-blanks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Cutting your own bridge blanks&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each part in a bridge has a designated name:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"291\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/bridge-parts-names.png?w=460\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-parts-names.png 460w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-parts-names-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Violin makers could enlarge the kidney ellipsis, smooth some areas they believe it&#8217;s worthwhile (for improved sound), and fitting the arch to the belly, positioning it near the <em>soundpost <\/em>and the <em>bassbar <\/em>for &#8216;optimal&#8217; results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>User <a href=\"https:\/\/maestronet.com\/forum\/index.php?\/profile\/25192-don-noon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Don Noon<\/a> (Maestronet) shared his bridge design, which consisted of a modified waist (notice also how he changed the wood on the point where the string touches the wood):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"439\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/bridge-designs-5.png?w=439\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1097\" style=\"width:273px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-designs-5.png 439w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-designs-5-300x295.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He experimented with <em>high frequencies responses<\/em> in a piece of rosewood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some vendors that sell maple bridges <strong>with ebony inserts<\/strong> (instead of letting players use a <em>bridge parchment<\/em>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/bridge-designs-7.png?w=500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1101\" style=\"width:278px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-designs-7.png 500w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-designs-7-300x257.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As  I&#8217;ve discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/07\/anatomy-of-a-violin-its-basically-17-parts\/\">previous post about violin parts names<\/a>, a luthier must take a bridge blank and use bridge templates to account for string thickness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"537\" height=\"907\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/bridge-fitted-unfitted.png?w=537\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-220\" style=\"width:369px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-fitted-unfitted.png 537w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-fitted-unfitted-178x300.png 178w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The curvature of a fitted bridge must account for the string&#8217;s thickness (GDAE orientation in the figure).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the template commonly employed to help in this task:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/bridge-template-reference.png?w=457\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-template-reference.png 457w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/bridge-template-reference-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">EADG orientation in the figure of a bridge template.
