    Nature-based components<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    A violin is basically composed of many organic materials<\/b> in its construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For instance, the “Hair” used on the bow is made of actual horse hair<\/b>: one could select hair out of Siberian, Mongolian, Manchurian, Polish, and also Argentinian horsehair. One could choose white or black colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Although modern strings are made of steel and plastic components, in the early days, they were made of animal guts, <\/b>typically sheep intestines. There is a very nice video on YouTube detailing how it is made<\/a>. To this day some violinists prefer to use animal gut.
    <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Finally, as you know, to glue it all together, violin makers use animal glue, produced out of connective tissues, namely, bones, skin\/hide, or sinew.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Notes on violin making: 19 basic steps?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Interestingly, one could ‘divide the labour’ on building a violin into the following tasks (order is not ‘written in stone’, of course):<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Work on the garland: blocks, c-bouts, upper\/lower bouts, sidestrips<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Prepare and work on the back<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Glue the back on the finished garland <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Prepare and work on the bell<\/span><\/span>y<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Work on the purflings in back and belly<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Carve out the f-holes<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    7. Glue the soundbar<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    8. Brand it: add nametag \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    9. Finish the soundbox: glue top on garland+back<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    10. Work on the neck (volute)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    11. Work on the fingerboard, glue it to the neck<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    12. Glue neck to soundbox in proper angle<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    13. Work on small parts: tail saddle, nut, carve out and adjust bridge<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    14. Prepare tuning pegs<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    15. Add rest of the parts: tailgut, tailpiece, endbutton<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    16. Add and adjust soundpost<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    17. Add strings<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    18. Prepare bow<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    19. Play it<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
