I see myself as a toolmaker and the musicians are my customers&#8230; They use my tools.<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Moog\">Robert Moog<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s some equipment you&#8217;ll have to put your hands on, others, not so much. I&#8217;ll try to list the absolute &#8220;must haves&#8221; tools in this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll divide my reasoning here in two parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>General woodworking tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specific violin making tools<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Another thing:<\/strong> prices are relative to October\/2023 and I assume you live in the UK, for simplification purposes and shipping international items. I&#8217;ll add not just tools, but the required wood as well: there&#8217;s no point only buying violin making tools without trying to build one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General woodworking tools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Obvious things:<\/strong> pencil, chalk, rulers (one flexible plastic and one metal, 150mm\/300mm), awl, burnisher (your awl or screw driver might serve as your &#8220;poor man&#8217;s&#8221; burnisher though), compass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vise\/vice:<\/strong> this one is tricky as one might build an entire violin without ever needing one. I would say this is useful if you want to do general woodworking, it helps a lot. For violin making, you could just use work holding items or a base that supports working on wood with the help of clamps, etc. For a good vise, one could spend \u00a325 (used).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Combination square (150mm):<\/strong> highly used to measure and test if your planning is perpendicular, without any gaps. Cost: \u00a35.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caliper:<\/strong> fundamental for measuring with precision (mine is not electronic &#8211; <em>it infuriates me when it runs out of battery<\/em>). A very nice one costs \u00a310.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wood plane:<\/strong> you&#8217;ll need at least one &#8220;jack-of-all-trades&#8221; plane: a N.4<sup data-fn=\"609e7da1-2587-4ed5-84d1-fa54d12706d5\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#609e7da1-2587-4ed5-84d1-fa54d12706d5\" id=\"609e7da1-2587-4ed5-84d1-fa54d12706d5-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> (good brands are Stanley or Record). You&#8217;ll see some luthiers working on expensive Veritas-like fancy planes like a N.5 or a low angle plane, etc. Well, you need a <strong><em>trusted N.4 only<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; not even a block plane. You can buy a very decent one on Ebay or for sell in the UK for about \u00a315. Of course you&#8217;ll need to learn how to use it and sharpen it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Saw:<\/strong> I&#8217;d recommend use a &#8220;japanese saw&#8221;<sup data-fn=\"d939ee5d-0e7c-467c-a836-d06044fb2595\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d939ee5d-0e7c-467c-a836-d06044fb2595\" id=\"d939ee5d-0e7c-467c-a836-d06044fb2595-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> (best, in my opinion) for initial belly\/back cuts, bass bar, blocks, scroll\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They work on the <em>push side<\/em>, they have a small kerf, useful for many tasks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Ryoba\u2019: double blade (one cross-cut and one rip-cut),&nbsp; \u00a325<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Dozuki\u2019 tenon saw: reinforced top, \u00a330 (you don&#8217;t necessarily need this one, except if you would be working in other projects)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fret saw (or coping saw):<\/strong> you need this for carving out the f-holes mostly. It&#8217;s about \u00a315 with some spare blades (they brake very easily).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sharpening &#8216;station&#8217;:<\/strong> oh boy, this one is a huge <em>rabbit hole<\/em>. You will have to decide the method you like the most out of diamond plates or stones (mostly). Quality items cost more, as you&#8217;d might expected. Let&#8217;s put \u00a325 here, but it could widely vary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lamp:<\/strong> you need a good lighting to guide your carving. It is such a mandatory item to work with precision. Cost: \u00a315<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rasps:<\/strong> you will need to put your hands on a set of rasps (various shapes and formats &#8211; round and straight, etc.)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remarks:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider buying the superior \u201cShinto\u201d saw file rasp (extraordinarily useful) for \u00a325<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will need to learn how to &#8216;sharpen&#8217; a rasp using a file and a burnisher &#8211; there&#8217;s a host of videos on YouTube about this<sup data-fn=\"e03a1c6f-095c-4af7-9b74-ccc105959e3e\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e03a1c6f-095c-4af7-9b74-ccc105959e3e\" id=\"e03a1c6f-095c-4af7-9b74-ccc105959e3e-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;ve bought a set of rasps in AliExpress specifically for violin making: I could be wrong, but I don&#8217;t feel they are &#8220;burnishable&#8221;, if you know what I mean (they  are so thin!). Well, they seem to work just fine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One set of fine rasps cost about \u00a320<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Files:<\/strong> you will need a good set (for working with wood only &#8211; buy another set for metal), round and straight, costing about \u00a325<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wood Marking Gauge (or wood scriber):<\/strong> there\u2019s several styles, one uses a wheel to mark, other use a small pin, etc. Cost: \u00a310<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chisels:<\/strong> firmer ones of size  \u00bc (8mm), \u00bd (12mm), and 1\u2019\u2019 (26mm), cost varies immensely, as you might acquire them used, etc. Let&#8217;s put \u00a320 here (you might not &#8220;need&#8221; all of those actually, unless you&#8217;ll think on working with wood).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sacrilegious items:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Sand paper:<\/em><\/strong> oh, how unconscionable and disparate, well, let&#8217;s put \u00a35 here (optional, given you&#8217;ll have your rasps).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>PVA glue:<\/strong><\/em> I&#8217;ve seen people glueing the purfling with PVA glue (oh no, not again, what a profanity of the old Cremonese methods!), and let&#8217;s put \u00a315 (optional).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Nails:<\/strong><\/em> I went too far&#8230; you don&#8217;t need this&#8230; I saw violins with a nail on the neck though &#8211; I need to investigate this further.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specific violin making tools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Moulds:<\/strong> there&#8217;s a plethora of moulds in violin making made out of different materials. For instance, there&#8217;s wood (plywood, MDF, etc.), acrylic\/plastic, metal (aluminium), and so on.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Base mould (skeleton): it&#8217;ll depend on the model you chosen (Stradivari? del Ges\u00f9? Guadagnini?). There&#8217;s aluminium molds for sale at Dictum that it is high-quality, as well as curvatures. Cost is about \u00a330 for an aluminium one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curvature\/arching: you could find this online or also buy at Dictum, in aluminium, for a decent price: \u00a310 for the back and \u00a31 for the top.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clamps:<\/strong> you will need some clamps of different sizes and mouth opening lengths (largest will be to use in the soundbar). Cost: \u00a330 (it varies a lot on choices and types). You could make your own and adapt clothes pins for the lining clamps, for instance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thumb planes: <\/strong>Also called finger planes, you will need a set of at least three of different sizes: two concave and one straight. Each one on AliExpress is about \u00a312 (with shipping).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gouges:<\/strong> you will need this &#8211; this is a mandatory item. They will have an outside bevel (or outcannel, out-cannel &#8211; there&#8217;s a fruitful <a href=\"https:\/\/maestronet.com\/forum\/index.php?\/topic\/178330-pros-cons-of-inside-or-outside-bevels-on-gouges\/\">discussion on Maestronet<\/a>). I&#8217;d recommend buying three sizes: \u00bc (8mm), \u00bd (12mm), and 1\u2019\u2019 (26mm). You could buy a decent set used, and you will need to learn how to sharpen it (&#8216;8&#8217;-shaped sharpening). Cost: let&#8217;s put \u00a325 here &#8211; it varies widely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purfling cutter:<\/strong> for marking the purfling position on the plates. Cost is \u00a310 in AliExpress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purfling chisel or pick:<\/strong> used for creating the grooves for purfling. You could make your own, but perhaps you could spend \u00a325 on one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Knifes:<\/strong> for basic carving, cutting the f-holes, marking the purfling, etc. They come in different sizes, and bevel types. Let&#8217;s put \u00a315 here.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Comment:<\/em> I\u2019ve got one \u201cSwann Morton Standard Scalpel Handle\u201d (Model No.3) costing \u00a35, with cheap (\u00a37 for 20 blades) to replace blades (model 10A) that I use for particular tasks (YouTube video on how to replace the blades: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bksyk6R6ybQ\">How to replace a blade safely on Swann Morton No 3 metal craft knife<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Glueing related:<\/strong> besides the glue itself, it might be useful to have a <em>heating lamp<\/em> (depending on your place of work, this might be quite useful to heat the wood before applying the glue), a cheap <em>crockpot <\/em>to heat the hide glue, a <em>glass thermometer<\/em>, and <em>brushes<\/em>. Let&#8217;s put \u00a325 on this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Depth-gauge:<\/strong> check\/measure depths in belly and back. On AliExpress this costs \u00a327.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rib  Bending Iron:<\/strong> for bending the ribs, purflings, and linings. Cost: \u00a327.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bridge template:<\/strong> For adjusting the bridge. Cost: \u00a35.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hole reamer and peg shaver:<\/strong> For adjusting the nuts. Cost: \u00a330<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set sound post kit:<\/strong> Cost: \u00a310<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Violin parts:<\/strong> for assembly final piece &#8211; Shoulder rest, Fine tuner, Tuning fork, Tuning peg set, Chinrest, Chinrest wrench, Adjustable plating chinrest adjuster, Tail piece with fine tuner(s), Tail gut, Violin strings, Fine tuner spinner adjusters, Endpins, Parchment (for bridges), tail saddle, and nut. Cost: \u00a325 (for making one violin).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strings:<\/strong> well, you&#8217;ll need a string set to play the violin, a decent set (Tonica Brand) is about \u00a340.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shellac flakes and varnishing items:<\/strong> Choices here also varies a lot. Let&#8217;s put \u00a325 here.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I won&#8217;t mention here the items required for testing frequencies and modes. You would have to acquire sound amplifiers, decent microphones (for capturing the sounds) and get acquainted on using special software like Audacity (for instance) to make this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other things I&#8217;m not addressing here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Separation tool (ultra thin \u2018spatula\u2019), useful if working with <em>restaurateur<\/em> work &#8211; one could modify a thin filler&#8217;s knife for this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other woodworker things: cleaning brush, block plane (N.60 and 1\/2) &#8211; it can be useful, block sander, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A poster of the violin you plan to make: it&#8217;s interesting to own one of those.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other things you&#8217;ll need<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tonewood:<\/strong> you&#8217;ll need to buy the wood for making the violin, mostly maple, spruce, and ebony parts. I very basic set would cost about \u00a3150 (with VAT+shipping).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hide glue:<\/strong> this one is a must, so you can repair your instruments if needed. It costs about \u00a35 for 100g (AliExpress).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purfling strips:<\/strong> buy a lot of those, it&#8217;s about \u00a310 on AliExpress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bridge:<\/strong> some bridges will be required. They are cheap though, with varying materials and overall quality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vendors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Facebook&#8217;s Marketplace:<\/strong>  good source of woodworking items &#8211; especially if you track UK items, sometimes you might find very good stuff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ebay.co.uk\/\">Ebay:<\/a><\/strong> very good source of used (and new) items as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aliexpress.com\/\">AliExpress:<\/a><\/strong> a lot of items are for sale in this platform. And be prepared: working with <em>metal <\/em>is way different than working with <em>wood<\/em>! \ud83d\ude00<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clamps:<\/strong> a lot of clamping could use only wood. <a href=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/05\/clamping-wood\/\">See previous post on this<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Compass:<\/strong> it is used throughout the build of a violin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wood marking gauge:<\/strong> it&#8217;s a simple and gratifying project to make.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Moulds:<\/strong> you could make a lot of moulds for your violin making, like base moulds, curvature moulds, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purfling:<\/strong> technically speaking, you could make your own purfling out of wood sandwiched together. There&#8217;s some YouTube videos detailing the process. Be prepared to work with dies, and whatnot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purfling cutter and Purfling chisel:<\/strong> well, you could make your own purfling items, modifying other tools altogether.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sacconi Compass:<\/strong> nice project to inspect your carving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fingerboard template + base:<\/strong> work on making your own templates and on a base to turn into the desired shape.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See my <a href=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.wordpress.com\/generic-woodworking-projects\/\">&#8220;Generic woodworking projects&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Epilogue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hope you have enjoyed this budgeting exercise. Before embarking on this project I did just that: how much would it cost me to kickstart all of this?
