{"id":21,"date":"2023-10-15T04:46:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-15T04:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.performanceware.com.br\/index.php\/2023\/10\/15\/measuring-and-marking-thicknesses\/"},"modified":"2024-11-07T04:16:23","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T04:16:23","slug":"measuring-and-marking-thicknesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/index.php\/2023\/10\/15\/measuring-and-marking-thicknesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Measuring and marking thicknesses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When inspecting the thicknesses of my plates, over the years I&#8217;ve encounter a lot of tool nomenclature to measure or mark large plates, for instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Marking caliper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sacconi compass<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thicknessing (or thickness) gauge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graduation (or graduating) marking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caliper gage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graduation punch <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Aamof (as the kids say), there&#8217;s two tasks here: 1. inspecting the depths; and 2. marking (with a pencil), regions &#8220;requiring attention&#8221; whilst carving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s delve into this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll start by this quote by Brutus (in the &#8220;Rome&#8221; TV series by HBO): <i>&#8220;you can call a cat a fish, but, if you throw it on water, it won&#8217;t swim&#8221;<\/i>. Nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Point is, regardless of its naming, you want to control the depths of your carvings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one basic model for measuring thicknesses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"554\" height=\"353\" data-id=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-1.png?w=554\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-1.png 554w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-1-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 554px) 100vw, 554px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a large <b>mouth<\/b> (or <b>throat<\/b>), so you can measure your plates. I&#8217;ve seen a lot of DIY tools in the internets, modifying other tools so it becomes a thicknessing gauge, however, this post is not about this today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could go &#8216;old style&#8217; and work on a tool that does that, like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"593\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-3-1.jpg?w=593\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-3-1.jpg 593w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-3-1-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Or even something like this Veritas model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"488\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-4.png?w=488\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-313\" style=\"width:330px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-4.png 488w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-4-266x300.png 266w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine if you could put your hands on this beauty here: a Waltham no. 2 W. Reilly&#8217;s Patent violin makers&#8217; caliper gage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-6.png?w=500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-6.png 500w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-6-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I digress, let&#8217;s go back to reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This model, for instance, resembles an F-Clamp and it uses a ruler (internally) to tell you the thickness of the piece:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"439\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-7.png?w=439\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-7.png 439w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-7-275x300.png 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;You could use a wedge to tell you the depth as well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1014\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-wedge-1.jpg?w=1014\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-317\" style=\"width:515px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-wedge-1.jpg 1014w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-wedge-1-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-wedge-1-768x454.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, you set your caliper at 5mm and then use the graduated wedge to &#8216;find&#8217; your thickness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I have found this one on the internets that looks and works quite neat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"736\" height=\"981\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-5.jpg?w=736\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-314\" style=\"width:324px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-5.jpg 736w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-5-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a little ruler to inform the depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sacconi Compass<span style=\"font-size: medium\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, to mark special regions worth your attention, you could work with something like this (the source is from Maestronet, user <a href=\"https:\/\/maestronet.com\/forum\/index.php?\/profile\/24474-janito\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">janito<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"492\" height=\"209\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/sacconi-compass-3.jpg?w=492\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sacconi-compass-3.jpg 492w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sacconi-compass-3-300x127.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 492px) 100vw, 492px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I (uppercase I) would make a hole in that end, even a very small one, this model <b>is asking for a splitting<\/b>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maestronet.com\/forum\/index.php?\/profile\/70417-davide-sora\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Davide Sora<\/a> has presented his own model, consisting of a large mouth and a pencil:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/sacconi-compass-1.png?w=1000\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sacconi-compass-1.png 1000w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sacconi-compass-1-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sacconi-compass-1-768x513.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s this model that if you could attach a pencil on the end of the tool, so it marks your depths accordingly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"270\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964a.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-2.jpg?w=270\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-2.jpg 270w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/thickness-caliper-2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, he haven&#8217;t touched on any &#8220;graduation punch&#8221; mechanism, that serves to other equally important tasks in violin making, but that&#8217;s the subject of another post, I believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Epilogue<span style=\"font-size: medium\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I have of course not exhausted this topic as always. There&#8217;s a lot of things to think about measuring thicknesses and so on.
