{"id":1456,"date":"2024-07-30T07:20:11","date_gmt":"2024-07-30T06:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.performanceware.com.br\/?p=1456"},"modified":"2024-12-11T04:36:13","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T04:36:13","slug":"mystique-and-lore-in-ancient-violin-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/index.php\/2024\/07\/30\/mystique-and-lore-in-ancient-violin-making\/","title":{"rendered":"Mystique and lore in ancient violin making"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Because one (and science) cannot exactly pinpoint what exactly made violins sound like they sound, numerous theories and explanations surfaced throughout the years.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"698\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/violin-analytics-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1459\" style=\"width:271px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/violin-analytics-1.png 646w, https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/violin-analytics-1-278x300.png 278w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In a sense, they serve to propagate the <em>mystique<\/em> and the extraordinary narrative surrounding violin making, turning this somewhat simple process into something out of god-like activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a known fact that Stradivari in particular never documented his process (I believe not even to his sons!), so, only chemical analyses help only a few pieces of the puzzle fit together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It didn&#8217;t contribute the fact that modern CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines,with perfect symmetry and alignments were <strong>unable<\/strong> to replicate the sound of the old masters, only increasing the <em>mystique<\/em> even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I randomly read in Internet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They sank the wood in a lake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strad treated the wood with a &#8216;personal recipe&#8217; to counter the &#8216;stoma&#8217; &#8211; little holes in the wood to let air in so the tree can breathe &#8211; to stay open; these would close up as the wood dries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Selected wood had enlarged cells caused by the brining (adding salt) process the maker used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The varnish used by Stradivari had gem dust sourced from jewelers who gave him leftover scraps out of gem cutting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stradivari treated his woods with a mixture of borax, copper, zinc, alum and lime water. (Source: Keith Randall, Texas A&amp;M University Division of Marketing &amp; Communications).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ancient violin makers preferred using French polish, that is better than lacquer because it let the wood breathe, producing a better sound. Heavier finishes dampen the sound.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Victor Schauberger believed the wood to be &#8220;special&#8221; because of it&#8217;s transport methods via water flume. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wood could only be sourced from the singing forest in the Dolomites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stradivari would search for sunken ships and broken boat oars, because the wood was very good and free. Later, as he became richer, the family&#8217;s primary wood of choice was Norway Spruce, for the front and back and Maple on the side and Ebony or rosewood on the neck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The wood was soaked in highly mineralised water from caves in that region. The wood became highly saturated with different minerals, then properly dried.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ACS\u2019 <em>Analytical Chemistry<\/em> report on a nanometer-scale imaging of two of Stradivari\u2019s violins, revealing a protein-based layer between the wood and varnish. Some makers would mix casein, calcium, and water to prepare a <em>potion<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A &#8220;common&#8221; recipe (<a href=\"https:\/\/maestronet.com\/forum\/index.php?\/topic\/349122-casein-on-the-inside-of-the-violin\/&amp;do=findComment&amp;comment=945042\">Maestronet link<\/a>) by Michael Molnar: \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>500 ml distilled water (this avoids dissolved minerals like iron)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>14 g Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) for a 0.25 M solution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>45 g acid casein (slowly dissolved)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>80 g table salt as a preservative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hufyqxZ--Sg\">Video by Davide Sora<\/a> on YT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And this list is obviously non-exhaustive. In the above figure, the <em>mortice<\/em> angles are straight or slightly off? Does it matter to sound?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"133\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/riccardo964.techster.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1783\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>More <em>unsubstantiated<\/em> claims altogether:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Soak wood in linseed oil (<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.culher.2017.08.001\">Echard et al<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of <em>diamond dust<\/em> that was rubbed into the wood that had to be dried at sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All in all, perhaps the Stradivari secret is that he was indeed a <strong>very good craftsman<\/strong>, after all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finally: <strong>the<\/strong> secret<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What is, actually, the secrets behind old violin&#8217;s extraordinary acoustics? <mark style=\"background-color:#f6f439\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Perhaps they were <em><strong>the friends we made along the way<\/strong><\/em>.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>Mr. Ping: The secret ingredient is\u2026 <strong>Nothing<\/strong>.<br>Po: \u2026Huh?<br>Mr. Ping: You heard me, nothing. There is no secret ingredient!<br>Po: Wait, wait. It&#8217;s just plain old noodle soup? You don&#8217;t add some kind of special sauce or something?<br>Mr. Ping: Don&#8217;t have to. <strong>To make something special, you just have to believe it&#8217;s special.<\/strong><\/em><br>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0441773\/\">Kung Fu Panda<\/a> (movie)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Epilogue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s agree that <strong>lot of the knowledge<\/strong> about this topic is <em>purely anecdotal<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great portion of the whole experience is <em>highly subjective<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, humans <em>need<\/em> stories to bring sense to their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We practically demand a &#8220;journey&#8217;s hero&#8221; narrative, such as the one pursued by Antonio Stradivari, a simple woodworker made rich and famous through his highly-sought violin making abilities.
